- A Jewish pawnbroker, victim of Nazi persecution, loses all faith in his fellow man until he realizes too late the tragedy of his actions.
- In this fiction film, a small girl in an urban slum seeks aid for her sick and starving mother. Trying to pawn her doll, she attracts the attention of the shop's owner old Isaacs, who later stops the men trying to evict the sick woman.
- Dignified old pawnbroker Manuel Dreyfus sends his daughter to college, where she meets wealthy young Gentile Edward Marshall. They become very fond of each other and Dreyfus is ill-at-ease when he sees that Aaron Stern, the young man whom he hopes will become Esther's husband, is disregarded. Edward's mother loses heavily at the whist club and her husband refuses to pay her debts. She pawns her necklace with Dreyfus. Later Dreyfus receives a note from Edward, asking him to bring Esther and meet the family. He does not inform his daughter of the visit which Mrs. Marshall has paid his place, heavily veiled, but he recalls the address on the pawn ticket. Dreyfus and Esther make the call and find the Marshalls rude and indifferent hosts. To relieve the embarrassment, Edward takes Esther for a walk. She realizes that she can never marry a Gentile, informs Edward of this, and goes home to meet Aaron, to whom she promised to give an answer. Mrs. Marshall becomes so insulting that the old pawnbroker takes the necklace from his pocket and returns it to her. He then goes home and finds a note from his daughter, stating that she has gone to be married. Thinking that Esther has eloped with the Gentile, Dreyfus flies into a passion. His rage subsides when the happy bride returns with her husband Aaron.
- "Mr. Nathans" keeps a pawn shop, incidentally he keeps a son whose idea of daily toil does not coincide with the father's thrifty notions. "Nathans" is an exception to the accepted idea of a pawnbroker. He is shrewd, blunt and sparing of words, but seldom has the poor outcast and unfortunate left his place without some little encouraging lift. The son "Abe" after several days' absence from home and finally puts in an appearance and proceeds to touch his father for some money. His mother and sister add their entreaties but to no purpose. The old game is played out with "papa." "Abe" then swaggers off conveying the impression that he will get it just the same. He has formed an attachment for an attractive young shoplifter. Aided by her pal the son forms a compact to rob his father. The scheme is carried out. "Mr. Nathans" is knocked senseless with a blackjack in the hands of his son, the till is robbed and the thieves depart. A quarrel occurs among the thieves. "Abe" is severely battered. At the same time the police break in, led by the father, who accuses his son. Five years later a poor broken figure of a man enters the shop. With tear dimmed eyes he implores his father's forgiveness. "Nathans" takes the prodigal to his heart and he is once more admitted to the family circle.
- Peggy didn't figure that feeding her husband with the choicest cuts from the Cavender steak was anything but proper, but it led to complications. Glen essayed to go into the kitchen and bawl out Peggy for sending little more than a bone to the family table. Mrs. Glen misconstrued the situation, and Peggy was canned. In the pawnshop, Conklin and Turpin doing their best to get their salaries with as little effort as possible. Peggy comes in and secrets herself with Cavender, in an effort to get her job back, it starts something, for Mrs. C. and Peggy's hubby don't get the angle. A band of crooks plan to rob the pawnshop. Clothing store dummies play an important part, and two bags, one with and one without cash, figure prominently in the plot.
